Today is World Refugee Day! Cities around Greece are holding festivals, lectures and other events to celebrate refugees’ strength, courage and perseverance.
Check out events in Athens, Thessaloniki and Lesvos happening between June 20 and 22.
"Together": Video, the vice mayor, Afghan music and more
- Where: Cafe at the Numismatic Museum of Athens
- When: Wednesday, June 21, 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
More Info: This event includes a panel discussion facilitated by the Greek journalist Dimitris Angelidis, talks by refugees, video and photo projections, a Q&A session, and a live music performance from Afghan refugees.
The vice mayor of Athens will give a welcome speech to open the event, which is run by 15 humanitarian organizations.
“Refugee Integration: the Positive Way Ahead” discussion
- Where: National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (central building, Argyriadi Room)
- When: Tuesday, June 20, 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.
More info: “Refugee Integration: the Positive Way Ahead” is the title of the event, which is organized by the Greek Council for Refugees. Among the speakers will be academics, GCR members, and refugees who will bring their personal experience into the discussion.

Lecture on Afghan refugees in Greece and Europe
- Where: Khora Community Center
- When: Thursday, June 22, 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
More Info: Mohammed Mirzay, a founder the organization Generation Outside Afghanistan, will discuss the history of immigration patterns, asylum systems in Europe, borders, unaccompanied children, and integration.

"Refugees' Dreams": Discussion on asylum, food festival and more
When: Tuesday, June 20, 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.
More info: The Greek Forum of Refugees and Amnesty International Greece have organized two events:
5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the City Council Hall: "Asylum and Integration: Present and Future," a panel discussion with representatives from the Greek Asylum Service, UNHCR and other organizations.
6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Kotzia Square: Multicultural food festival, music from Syria and Afghanistan, activities for kids, bazaar, photo exhibition, and more.
Food, music, crafts and more
- Where: The courtyard of Thessaloniki City Hall
- When: 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.
More info: This event includes food, music, handicrafts and exhibitions created by refugees and Greeks working together. UNHCR, humanitarian organizations and local governments organized the event. Everyone is welcome!
Photo exhibition, poetry reading and tea party
- Where: The park in Epano Skala, in front of the MSF clinic
- When: Tuesday, June 20, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
More Info: Refugee, locals and humanitarian organizations gather for a photography exhibition showcasing refugees who arrived in Lesvos in 1922 and refugees who arrived recently. Children who live in Moria and are traveling without their families will give a poetry reading.
After the exhibition, from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., the Hellenic Red Cross will be serving tea and snacks at the Olive Grove, next to Moria.
