You need a tax number, called an AFM, to legally work in Greece.
To get one, you need to go in person to the closest tax office to where you live. You do not need an appointment.
All tax offices in Greece have to be open between 7:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. However, staff are required to serve the public only 5.5 hours a day. As a result, many locations open later than 7:30 a.m. and stop serving people as early as 1:30 p.m.
When you go to the tax office, bring:
- Your Full Registration card or Residence Permit
- Proof of address
Be prepared to wait awhile at the tax office to get your AFM number.
