Free Family Reunification flights will start again soon, with an announcement expected within the next few months, the Greek Asylum Service has confirmed.
Additionally, they confirmed that more people will be eligible to book and buy their own Family Reunification flight tickets this month.
Who is eligible
☎️ The Asylum Service says it will call you when it’s your turn to book your tickets, but in general:
🇩🇪 People in Greece who were approved for Family Reunification to Germany in June 2017 can book and buy their own flights now. 🇩🇪
🇩🇪 People in Greece who were approved for Family Reunification to Germany in July 2017 will get permission to book and buy their own flights in late June and in July, the Asylum Service told us. 🇩🇪
🇩🇪 People in Greece who were approved for Family Reunification to Germany in November 2017 will also get permission to book and buy their own flights in June, the Asylum Service told us. 🇩🇪
🇪🇺 People in Greece who were approved for Family Reunification to any other European country (not Germany) in December 2017 or January 2018 can book and buy their own flights now. 🇪🇺
I was approved for Germany between July 2017 and October 2017. Can I book?
Not yet, the Asylum Service told us. Here’s why:
Under official rules, after you get approved for Family Reunification, you have 6 months to fly to your new country. After 6 months, your destination country can refuse to let you in.
However, Germany has informally agreed to extend the deadline for people in Greece who were approved for Family Reunification between July 2017 and October 2017. They can travel to Germany even after the 6-month deadline.
Germany hasn’t confirmed that it will extend the 6-month deadline for people approved in November 2017 or later, so the Greek Asylum Service wants to make sure those people book their tickets in time.
I was approved for a country other than Germany in February. When can I book?
You may be able to book near the end of June, the Asylum Service said.
What to know at the travel agency
If you are approved to fly, you can go to any travel agency in Greece and book at your own cost.
Bring your family’s Full Registration cards and your approval document with you.
Important: The Asylum Service says you should make sure the travel agency calls the transfers office of the Asylum Service’s Dublin Unit to verify that you can fly. The travel agency should call before booking, the Asylum Service said.
We have heard reports that some people have lost their money because their travel agency booked before checking with the Asylum Service.
They can reach the Dublin Unit at 2106988748 and 2106988749.
Be aware that the lines are very busy. The number of people trying to book their tickets is very high, and the Asylum Service is very understaffed right now.
Once your tickets are booked, ask the travel agency to call the Dublin Unit again and remind them about your flights — that way, they can make sure your new country is expecting your arrival.
You can ask them to send you a copy of your itinerary, too.
Can I still wait for the Greek Asylum Service to arrange and pay for my flight tickets?
If you are waiting for Family Reunification to any European country, including Germany, if you got approval from November 2017 onwards, you must arrive there no later than 6 months after getting approval.
The Greek Asylum Service told us that soon they will be able to re-launch free Family Reunification flights, but you shouldn’t wait if there is a risk to miss the 6-month deadline.
After 6 months, the country you are going to can refuse to let you in, and you will have to stay in Greece.
Safe flights, everyone!
